What does aeration do?

With aeration outside air is added to water by means of diffusion. Diffusion is distributing the air into fine bubbles. The fine bubbles make it possible to transfer oxygen to water. The airflow creates a water-flow. The flow can be used to mix water and / or to keep constituents in the water in suspension (ensuring that it does not settle). A strong airflow in the water can also be used to strip out (blow out) gases such as methane or hydrogen sulphide. Also aeration can create a screen of bubbles which can prevent constituents from moving through.
